The Melzak-Wall ‘Pain Gate Control’ Theory in Chiropractic and How it Works

Chiropractic theories and treatments are scientific, based on our Human Anatomy, Physiology and Physics. One of the fundamentals of the Science of Chiropractic is the Melzak-Wall ‘Pain Gate Control’ Theory.

What is Melzak-Wall ‘Pain Gate Control’ Theory?

Using the ‘Pain Gate’ Theory, Chiropractic deactivates the nociceptive receptors {nociceptive signals relate to the perception or sensation of pain} that inhibit the transmission of nociceptive signals in the dorsal or posterior horn of the spinal cord, ‘gating out’ painful stimuli (Vigotsky & Bruhns, 2015). In other words, Chiropractic helps to open the gates of the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, which contains neurons that receive somatosensory information {somatosensory is the cortex of the brain that receives and processes information} from the body, transmitted to the brain via ascending pathways.}

From the law of specific nerve frequencies, impulses conveyed to the central nervous system by nociceptive afferent fibres {those that send information to, rather than from, the brain and travel back to the spinal cord} would be ‘deemed as painful’. Those impulses conveyed via contact-sensitive fibres would be ‘interpreted as mechanical stimulation’ that are non-injurious.

Melzak/Wall pointed out that these signals are often ‘blocked, inhibited, unexcited or confused’. Pain, numbness, tingling, neuralgia {pain in a nerve pathway} and causalgia {severe pain in a limb caused by injury to peripheral nerve} are some sensations that could happen even with gentle touch or vibration. Often, sensation of pain due to tissue damage may ‘disappear or diminish’ in emotional excitement or outbursts when ‘counterirritants’, such as ointment or heat used to counter underlying pain or discomfort, are present. Do not be misled by such temporary relief!

Impulses of the brain in the large mechanoreceptive fibres {mechanoreceptors respond to ‘mechanical’ pressure, converting them into electrical signals for the central nervous system} and those in the small nociceptive fibres come together as specialised nerve cells (T-cells). These cells are present in the posterior horn of the gray matter [ie the darker tissue of the brain and spinal cord] in the spinal system. The posterior horn processes somatosensory information {sensations such as pressure, pain or warmth, which can occur anywhere in the body and not associated with the primary sense organs}, and transmits it to the brain through the ascending tracts.

How Does the Pain Gate Control Theory Work?

When movement in T-cells reaches an elevated level, it is ‘construed’ as a sign of potential tissue injury and responded to as if it were painful or aggressive. This signals a demand for awareness and action. If this were true, any extreme somatosensory stimulation would be painful. The Gate Control Theory propounds the existence of a ‘Sensory Gate’ that controls the signals, and may give you a false perception of “I’ve no pain; hence, I’ve no problem.” However, the pain is latent and may be ‘manifested’ when the nerves undergo chiropractic adjustments and healing.

Both the large and small fibre inputs (nociceptive and non-nociceptive inputs) can be ‘hindered by inhibitory interneurons{association neurons exclusively found in the central nervous system} in the substantia gelatinosa area of the dorsal gray matter. The substantia gelatinosa of Rolando or SGR is a gray matter structure of the dorsal spinal cord involved in transmitting or modulating pain, temperature or touch. These inhibitory interneurons act immediately at the sensory nerve endings of the afferent neurons near the skin surface. Once its effectiveness declines, it hinders information transmission to the T-cells. These inhibitory interneurons, due to the descending influences from the brain, are always in force, tending to hold the Sensory Gate partly closed (law of centrifugal influences). This is not ideal, as it will compress the nerve pathways and cause pain, numbness, tingling etc.

The large mechanoreceptive fibres initiate the inhibitory cells, and are inclined to close the Sensory Gate. The small nociceptive fibres, on the other hand, impede the substantia gelatinosa inhibitory cells. By this ‘inhibition of inhibition’ principle, they open up the Sensory Gate. If the spinal cord is free from subluxation {that is misalignment-free}, large mechanoreceptive fibres carry constant impulses to the spinal cord and maintain the Sensory Gate in a closed position. With subluxation, there is a compression factor on the spinal nerve root, and that compression selectively blocks large mechanoreceptive fibres. As a result, the signs of pain may occur due to the opening effect of the Sensory Gate. On the other hand, the removal of compression-causing subluxation may allow the return of the large mechanoreceptive fibres impulses, closing the gate and alleviating the symptoms of pain. This is one of the scientific theories explaining the cause and benefits of Chiropractic.

‘Nature Needs No Help, Just No Interference’

Chiropractic founded and propounded by Dr. Daniel David Palmer in 1895 in Davenport USA has come a long way since. Chiropractic is about removing nervous system interference rather than fixing it. BJ Palmer (Developer of Chiropractic) said and I quote: “Nature needs no help, just no interference.” Today, we have many scientific explanations on why and how Chiropractic works, and with evidence validating the philosophy, principles, and practice.

Say No to Television and Social Media during Dinner

“This the Season to be jolly!” With the year-end festivities just round the corner and Singapore moving towards endemic Covid status, we can once again look forward to having mealtime bonding with family and friends.

Good Mealtime Habits without Television and Electronic Devices

A study published in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology in April 20161 found that the positive effects of eating together as a family are often negated by watching television or videos at the same time. Overall, TV diners miss precious interaction time with family members and should consider switching off the television and all electronic devices during mealtimes. As a modern and first world country like the United States, Singapore is increasingly facing similar issues. In modern times, many individuals neglect mealtimes. Eating together with sacred connections and shared conversations has become a privilege rather than a norm. This is a worrying trend.

Mealtimes together are important social interaction times for both children and adults. People need to connect with and talk to one another while they eat, opening the way for meaningful communication and personal bonding. Parents with busy work schedules and children with multiple extracurricular activities often have difficulty finding common time to connect, resulting in distance relationships, isolation and even depression.

There is evidence to suggest that individuals who spend more time watching television and videos have worse diets, while families that frequently eat together have better wholesome meals and eating habits. Another culprit of bad diets is eating deep-fried or junk food during screen time. In addition, certain television viewings can affect digestion while eating. Anything with extremes, especially violence, suspense and comedies that illicit emotions and tensions can put more stress on an already busy digestive system. Moreover, our digestive system is ‘intricately linked’ to the nervous system, which is explained below.

Let us make the best of meetings with families and friends by being present with them and eliciting conversations that are meaningful and memorable. These shared memories will last a lifetime than wasting our precious time on television, social media and watching too much videos that may not be ultimately beneficial to our health and well-being.

Link between Digestive System and Nervous System

Our digestive system is linked to the enteric nervous system (ENS). The ENS or our intrinsic nervous system consists of mesh-like neurons that govern our gastrointestinal tract or gut. It is our second brain. Chiropractic is about the entire nervous system, with many neurons connecting to the brain and a bigger neural capacity than the actual brain itself.

A huge issue I encounter in my practice today is inflammation. Many people consume deep fried foods every day, which cause increased inflammation in their bodies.  Higher susceptibility to inflammation affects muscle tonicity or spasticity, which might cause the spine to misalign. Symptoms include pain, numbness, stiffness, tingling, fatigue, and digestive issues.

With another year ending soon, do make time for family and friendship meals and wean off electronic distractions, deep-fried and inflammatory foods. Have a ‘belly happy’ meal with your family and friends!

Universal Intelligence, Innate Intelligence Healing and Subluxation in Chiropractic

Core of Chiropractic

The fundamental concepts of traditional chiropractic philosophy may seem daunting upon initial exposure. The complexity of such concepts is paradoxical due to the inherent simplicity once you have good understanding of how your brain and body function. One of these concepts is subluxations.

Chiropractic is a deductive science: we make chiropractic deductions based on the premise that life is ‘intelligent’. In turn, an ‘intelligent creator’ exists. The intelligent creator is the creator of all matter that manages and organises our existence, providing matter to maintain our existence. This is the concept of universal intelligence, where life is a manifestation of movement. A part of this universal intelligence is our innate intelligence, which can constructively adapt the forces and matter from the universe. Chiropractic theories and hypotheses are generally deductions from these universal truths, supported by clinical findings.

Innate Intelligence within Our Body

Innate intelligence in humans exists within our brains. The brain controls our emotional, mental and physical functions through the spinal cord and nervous system components. Innate intelligence is a self-regulating system that maintains our state of health through mechanisms of adaptation. Our innate intelligence helps us adapt to the elements of the universe associated with the human body. Good health is a result of a perfect adaptation. Conversely, imperfect adaptation results in disease(s).

It is imperative to understand that, as a component of universal intelligence, innate intelligence ‘cannot be flawed’. It is ‘intrinsically perfect’. Any imperfect adaptation of our human system is a result of improper transmission of innate forces in the nervous system rather than a result of innate intelligence errors. Alterations of the spinal column indirectly interfere with the transmission of these innate forces. We can trace the root of all disease(s) to the effects of alterations of the spinal column on nerve tissues. Interference of neurological functions arising from spinal column alterations may negatively affect the adaptive mechanisms of the body. This causes disruption of the homeostatic balance and, in turn, displaces segments of the spinal column and subsequently the state of health. Chiropractic refers to the displaced segments of the spinal column as subluxations. A subluxation is the state of a vertebra that has lost its proper alignment in relation to the vertebra above and below or both. This misalignment of the vertebrae allows for the interference of nerve transmission and results in the state of disease.

Nerve transmission is a cycle consisting of many nervous system components. The brain sends and receives messages from all parts of the body via the spinal cord, spinal nerve roots, and the nerves themselves. Efferent nerves transmit information leaving the brain to all parts and cells of the body and transmit information perceived by the body back to the brain. This information pathway to and from the brain centre and tissues of the body are like the ‘mental current’ and ‘mental impulses’. Transmitted by nerves, mental impulses are the connection between intelligence and matter. They are therefore necessary for life. For example, if we damage one of our nerves, the tissue it supplies loses function and consequently dies. When a subluxation compromises the nerve transmission of mental impulses, the associated tissue cells adopt a weakened state of dysfunction. To restore the proper functions of tissue cells, we must remove the disruption of transmission. The removal of this interference and consequent restoration of function is the purpose of chiropractic adjustment.

What is Subluxation in Chiropractic?

Subluxation is the adaptation of a system that is protecting itself, a form of defence physiology.  When the system does not have a strategy to process an experience or stimulus, then it does not have the energy or resources either. Hence, it resorts to binding its energy in an attempt to protect itself and give itself more time to create the change or shift in a more authentic and thermodynamically efficient manner.  Without this mechanism, many systems would lose their energy and crash. Crashing in a biological sense can possibly lead to dis-ease or, in serious cases, death.

Subluxation is a diminished state of being, not just a bone out of alignment. The human body has an amazing ability to maintain its own health when provided with the right amounts and the right types of healthy signals. When we remove harmful or unhealthy signals and enhance appropriate signals, the body system creates a healthy outcome and vice versa. Unhealthy signals can come by way of physical, mental/emotional/social, or chemical imbalance. Subluxation could possibly prevents dis-ease and even death. It is the “silent killer”.  It is like a circuit breaker in an electrical box.  It is a form of adaptation, just not the most thermodynamically effective or efficient one, but the only option available to the system at that level of energy.

Chiropractors can recognise the root cause of disease by adjusting the displaced segments of the spinal column, thereby removing the interference of innate force transmission. The beauty of chiropractic is its ability to restore the normal transmission of forces, allowing proper homeostasis and adaptation without adding any force or material to the body in order to restore health. Chiropractic adjustments facilitate the proper functioning of the body without causing undue harm or unwanted adverse effects.

Chest, Rib and Shoulder Disharmonies and Discomforts

Have you ever experienced pain and discomfort around your chest, ribs, sternum and upper back?  If yes, you could be suffering from one or more of the following conditions:

  • Costovertebral joint dysfunction (‘costo’ means ‘rib’)
  • Costotransverse disorders
  • Costochondritis
  • Tietze syndrome

Patients with extreme and rigorous physical activities like sports, yoga, and gymnastics; or had injuries, accidents and infections usually experience these conditions. The conditions may appear related, but affect different areas of the chest, ribs, sternum, shoulders and spine.

Costovertebral Joint Dysfunction

The costovertebral joint is the section where the head of a rib articulates with a vertebra of the thoracic spine. Costovertebral Joint Dysfunction could occur when there is damage to the connective tissue that surrounds the joint due to sudden movement involving bending, lifting or twisting through the thoracic spine; or due to a fall, accident or injury.  It may also happen when the upper thoracic region is provoked by ‘pump handle’ movements like reaching, bending or carrying loads on the shoulder, while mid and lower costovertebral problems are provoked by ‘bucket handle’ motions of bending, lateral flexion, and rotation. Usually, the sudden impact will cause muscle spasm, pain and stiffness the following day(s). The disorders cause a dull ache in the upper back. Deep breathing, coughing, or rotation of the trunk and rib cage could worsen the pain. Costovertebral and rib cage pain is a common complaint during pregnancy.

Complaints of costovertebral joint dysfunction range from focal and burning to sharp, stabbing, and radiating pain.  Patients sometimes describe concurrent costovertebral and costosternal pain as if they were “shot by an arrow.” Costovertebral joint dysfunction presents clinically as localised pain, 3-4 cm lateral to the spine with possible radiation of symptoms along the associated rib.  The pain usually occurs between the shoulder blades and one side of the spine. Radiating complaints may include hyperalgesia or paraesthesia.

Costotransverse Disorders

The Costotransverse Disorders occur at juncture where the neck and tubercle (small rounded point) of a rib is ‘joined’ with the transverse process of its corresponding vertebra.  Ligaments connect the costovertebral and costotransverse joints. The juncture between the costotransverse and costovertebral joints must fall in place together so that the rotational axis passes both joints, mostly as ‘coupled’ motions. For example, during respiration, as the ribs rises, the neck gets depressed. This movement is akin to a ‘pump handle’ elevation for the upper ribs, while the lower ribs move in an anterior to posterior manner like a ‘buckle handle’ movement.

Disorders in these joints account for pain in the thorax or functional impairments. When subjected to severe trauma, these joints can subluxate or dislocate. Being located at the top of the rib cage, the first costotransverse joint is the most vulnerable. Persons with spondylitis usually have costotransverse joint disorders.

Costochondritis and Tietze Syndrome

Costochondritis, sometimes called chest wall pain or Costosternal Syndrome, is a condition where there is inflammation of the cartilage that joins your ribs to your sternum (breastbone). It could mimic an experience of a fracture for younger adults. Tietze Syndrome is less common, but also involves inflammation of the costochondral joint, with chest swelling which may last even after any pain and tenderness is gone.  Costochondritis tends to affect those above 40, while tietze syndrome usually affects younger adults below 40.

The causes of costochondritis and tietze syndrome could be due to injury to your chest from sudden or prolonged physical exertion. The inflammation may create moderate localised chest pain to sharp and severe stabbing pain that radiates to your shoulder and upper back. Often, the pain is on the left of the sternum; hence, some may think that they have a heart attack. Symptoms of costochondritis may begin following sudden, unguarded, or explosive movements like coughing or sneezing.  Patients will often report a history that includes twisting, reaching, pushing, or pulling; repeated strenuous exercises like yoga and gymnastics; or bacterial, fungal, viral or respiratory tract infections.

Persons involved in wrestling, rugby, football, golf, swimming (butterfly strokes), rock climbing, yoga, singing, carrying of heavy weights and whiplash injury may be predisposed to costochondritis and tietze syndrome. Persons with biomechanical deficits, including a forward head posture, upper cross syndrome, hypokyphosis, scoliosis, or dysfunctional respiration may also be predisposed to thoracic and rib dysfunctions.  Undiagnosed rib dysfunction or costochondritis often cause unnecessary worry about more sinister diseases like cancer, heart attacks, strokes etc, and procrastination or failure to diagnose and treat a threatening origin have serious consequences.

Generally, chiropractic and manual therapy can alleviate and treat the above dysfunctions without need for imaging scans in the initial stages of pain. Radiographs may be necessary in cases of significant trauma, suspicion of fracture or instability, those ages over 50, or cases with lack of improvement with conservative care, or neuromotor deficits. The presence of red flags, including unexplained weight loss, history of cancer, corticosteroid use, osteoporosis, fever, or drug/alcohol abuse, also warrant further investigation.

Chiropractic adjustments and manual therapy are mainstay treatments for Costovertebral Joint Dysfunction, Costotransverse Disorders, Costochondritis and Tietze Syndrome. If you are experiencing rib pain, search ‘costochondritis chiropractor’, call our office, or visit our website for more information.

Achieving Optimal Chiropractic Care@ Dr Chiro

Optimal Care is a subjective concept. It depends on the belief, mindset, and priorities of individuals, as well as whether they treasure the health and lives of themselves and their loved ones. We hope that every patient who walks into our clinic wants the best life possible for himself/herself and his or her friends and family. Best life needs best health.

In today’s competitive and stressful world, careers, material goods and possessions often take priority over care for our own body, mind, and emotional needs. Over time, the emotions and stresses become the CAUSE(S) that create EFFECT(S) in our bodies, minds and emotional well-being.  We suffer from all sorts of ailments, diseases, imbalances, health conditions, pain, tumours and more. Some realise the negative impact early and take timely interventions – be it through non-drug, non-invasive treatments like chiropractic care, natural therapies, herbal treatments or via drugs/medicine or invasive treatments, which many are familiar with. Some ignore the warning signals and are ‘gripped or crippled’ with pain and misery for life. Some of my patients with persistent pain and conditions shared that their healthcare professionals advised them that they had ‘no problems’, or that they should see a psychologist for ‘imagining the pain’, or to go for surgery. If you really need a surgery for a life-threatening issue, go for it; if not, you may wish to opt for alternative natural, non-drug and non-invasive treatments.

If you are one of those who have been neglecting your body and letting it accumulate unwanted stress, conditions, chronic ailments, and pain for so many years, it is a wake-up call to take action right now, before it is too late. Many of my patients come to me with conditions that have existed for many years, often suppressing the effects through many years of taking drugs without curing the effects or eliminating the causes. Moreover, when they visit me, some expect instant miracle cures. I told them politely “I am not God but will do my best to get you gain your health.”

At Dr Chiro, our philosophy of health care is simple. We want those who visit us to understand the connectivity and relationship within the body system, and how the nerves in each part of the body and entire nervous system connect to the brain via the spine. Through tracing the history of the conditions or injuries, doing body scans (via body scanner), using a proprietary US-originated Zone Technique, and/or X-rays/MRIs for serious cases, we establish the ‘causes and source’ of the conditions, ailments and pain.

Let us not ‘abuse’ our own body and health. Let us help you achieve optimal health as soon as possible. Let us consider these important factors to ensure successful turnaround:

  1. You consider your/loved ones/family’s health as your top priority worthy of your investment – above personal time, work schedule, careers, and other distractions of life.
  2. You want long-term, permanent solutions to restore your/your loved ones/family health.
  3. You are willing to learn and understand the cause(s) of the pain or problem, and feel confident, knowing the chiropractic doctor will study and recommended the optimal care solution for your condition(s).
  4. You want to live long and healthy lives, knowing that the full functioning of your body is essential for wellbeing throughout your life. We have patients considering suicide due to ‘functional disability’ or extreme prolonged pain.
  5. You are willing to commit to and invest in your health financially, especially if your problems have been with you for a long time. There is no magic cure without commitment

It is not easy for everyone to believe in the success and value of chiropractic care. I have few patients/clients who questioned the efficacy of chiropractic treatments vis-a-vis other mainstream treatments. Fortunately, the majority of my patients/clients have tried other solutions to treat their health problems without success and decided to turn to chiropractic care.

We have solved the health problems of many clients, who turned from sceptics to our valued advocates. One of them is 70-year-old ‘Grandma Fu Ling’ (name changed to protect her identity). She has been suffering from back pain for two decades and is on long-term painkiller to suppress the unbearable pain. In the first three sessions, she felt that the pain got worse.  We explained that it was because her body was adjusting to the treatments through the process of retracing, and re-training its innate ability to heal itself and assured that she would get better after a few sessions. After six months of almost weekly treatments, her pain is completely gone. Nowadays, she only come for maintenance care every now and then. She told me that she had never felt so happy in her life in so many years. Grandma Fu Ling is an initial sceptic-turned-believer in chiropractic and have referred many other individuals to us.

We are NOT just service providers.  We are long-term wellness coaches, health educators, optimistic encouragers, accountability partners, and health hope givers! We are NOT an alternative to Pain. We are Nervous System Specialist focusing on the Brain, Spine and Nervous System to help people take their health and life back. We are committed to practising Chiropractic as the big picture of optimal health, transforming your health from inside out!

Harmless Daily Routines Could Escalate to Serious Health Problems

Organ

How Injury Starts & Grows Into Diseases

Stomach

You injure your STOMACH when you do not have breakfast in the morning.

The stomach is the ‘Mouthpiece’ of one’s health. In fact, all diseases start from the stomach. Proper digestion and good gut will help establish a good connection with the brain. In turn, the brain affects the nervous system and the spine, which is the origin of many diseases.

Spleen /Pancreas

You injure your SPLEEN/PANCREAS when you eat sweet things because they taste ‘good’ and are freely available.

The Spleen/Pancreas is the ‘Gateway’ to absorbing external solar energies (Vitamin D from sun), and helping your digestion and growth. Like the stomach, it is the key controller of your growth and nerves.

Large Intestines

You injure your LARGE INTESTINES when you eat more fried and spicy food.

Your large intestines are your ‘Waste System’. They give harmony and rhythm in your system, or the reverse. You need proper functioning intestines to ensure that your body can eliminate wastes from your system.

Lungs

You injure your LUNGS when you breathe in smoke and stay in polluted or smoke-filled environments.

Lungs represent the ‘Airflow System’ in your body. Air is the foundation of energy circulation within the body. It helps overall mental and physical needs – for the head, the brain and the nervous system. That is why we take a deep breath, or breathe in-breathe out when troubled.

Gallbladder

You injure your GALLBLADDR when you do not sleep by 11 pm-12 midnight and do not wake up until sunrise.

The gallbladder is the ‘Traffic Controller’ of our mental attitudes and stress. It helps give clarity to the ‘why and what’ you do or decide.

Liver

You injure your LIVER when you eat heavily fried, junk and fast food.

The liver is the ‘Plastic Surgeon’, helping your nourishment, eyes, nails, ligaments and tendons. Having balanced and healthy food and nutrition will help your liver.

Bladder

You injure your BLADDER when you do not drink adequate water and eliminate urinary waste from your system.

The bladder is your ‘Toilet Flushing System’. The bladder removes wastes and ‘negative thoughts’. Everything has its origin in thoughts. Many health issues are due to fears and doubts.

Kidneys

You injure your KIDNEYS when you do not drink 8-10 glasses of water in 24 hours.

The kidney is your ‘Life Sustaining Force’, the epicentre of life’s development and reproduction. Fear of inadequacies or limitations will affect your kidneys.

Small Intestine

You injure your SMALL INTESTINE when you eat cold and stale food and drinks.

The small intestine is the ‘Root System’ of the body constitution. It helps in deep assimilation of thought, food and nutrients to feed the cells in the body.

Heart

You injure your HEART when you eat your meals with more salt than needed and cholesterol-rich food.

The Heart is the ‘Pumping Station’ of the body. It manifests problems within your body. Usually, other organs not doing its work well will burden the heart, even though the heart is the strongest and ‘most perfect’ organ in the body.

Eyes

You injure your EYES when you work under the blue light of your mobile phone, electronic devices and computer screen in the dark.

Your eyes are your ‘Windows to Your Soul’. The eyes reflect the mental-emotional-physical state of your mind and body.

Brain

You injure your BRAIN when you start thinking negative thoughts about yourself, your job, your life, others and everything.

Your brain is the ‘Engine’ powering your entire nervous system and body functions. Disharmony causes problems in the spine, which forms the main central system affecting all physical and muscular functions.

Soul

You injure your SOUL when you do not have family and friends to care for and share with you the affection, laughter, peace, sorrow and joy, to make you whole.

Your soul is your ‘Moral or Spiritual Centre’. It is an embodiment of your emotional and intellectual energy, which is an integral and vital core of a human being.

The Nervous System Controls Everything in Your Body

Our organs and entire body ecosystem must function well to achieve good health and happiness. Not all body parts and organs are replaceable and available in the market.

Chiropractic is about the Nervous System, the Brain, the Spine, and all the Nerves that enter every cell, every organ, and every function in your body. Your Nervous System controls and gives life to all cells in your body. When you take care of your health through regular chiropractic analyses and adjustments, you can eliminate interferences in the nervous system. By doing so, your entire body can function healthily from inside out, naturally. You will live life effortlessly like a ‘dance’ instead of a ‘drill’. So take good care of yourself, loved ones, and keep your body parts healthy. Be adjusted and feel the difference.

Why Do You Experience Borborygmus or Stomach Rumblings During a Chiropractic Session?

Borborygmus (plural borborygmi) (from Greek βορβορυγμός) is a rumbling, growling, gurgling or squeaking noise from the abdomen or stomach. The movement of gas through the bowels or intestines of humans and animals noise caused the rumbling sound (extracted from Wikipedia).

The concept and phenomenon of Borborygmus are useful to understand the cause and effects of naturally-occurring metaphysical flows of energy, gas and fluids happening within our body.

A number of years ago, as I laid on the chiropractic table as a chiropractic patient myself, I was anxious of what will happen, and my stomach began to rumble loudly. It happened 5 minutes into the Chiropractic session, and I did what I think many of you would do in a similar situation: I apologised for the ‘untimely noises’ that my stomach was making. My anxiety was the stressor (the cause) of my stomach rumbling (the effect).

The first thing the Chiropractor did was to put me at ease by explaining the Borborygmus phenomenon. It usually happens a while after a client lies on the chiropractic table.  He assured me that everything was okay and my body was reacting normally.  He shared that, in Chiropractic, these sounds “are considered a compliment”. In Western Medicine, they call these sounds Borborygmi. I believe that many of you can relate to my experience – whether you are a practitioner, a student of health, or as the person who experienced borborygmus.

Here is the metabolic explanation on why and how Borborygmus happens.

When your body responds or reacts to a stimulus or trigger, you may experience a ‘fight or flight’ response (that is a cause and effect relationship). This will result in an ‘inhibition’ in the stomach and upper digestive tract action. The brain will then activate and direct the nerve flow to the parts of the body needed most for action – for fight or flight. When the stressor or trigger is gone, the stomach motility (that is the movement of organism via metabolic energy), as well as other functions, resume.

For humans, the fight or flight emergency response played a strong role in man’s early evolution. The need to respond or react to attacks, as well as to attack and defend oneself, were often daily occurrences then. As we moved into the modern age, the emergency responses that require huge amounts of physical effort and need for full-fledged fight or flight responses lessened.

However, the tendency for our bodies to act (or over-react) continued in our modern day living. Often, these reactions of fight or flight can inhibit, slow down, halt, or even alter our body’s physical or metabolic and functions and processes, such as the digestive or sexual response systems, in order to focus on the stress situation(s). Typically, this will cause negative effects like constipation, anorexia, poor digestion, difficulty in urinating, erectile dysfunction and difficulty in maintaining sexual arousal. The danger is that any prolonged exposure to stress responses without any intervention or treatment can cause a chronic suppression of the immune system function.

I believe that many are walking around each day in a partial or full state of fight or flight. Clients often arrive at my practice after ‘fighting’ a heavy traffic, ’hearing’ negative news on the radio, ‘feeling angry’ with their boss, colleague or family member, ‘feeling exhausted’ with punishing workload, and more stressors. It is only after they lay still on the treatment table, the chiropractic work begins and they slowly ‘detach’ themselves from the perceived stressors of the outside world.

Good hands-on manual chiropractic adjustments and care can allow the feeling of threat and stress to diminish. Once your mind is free from the bondage of fear, fight and flight, then the digestion (of both food and thoughts) can resume normally. It is then that the borborygmic kicks in. Voila, your body is now functioning normally again!

We encourage you to appreciate the ‘new normal’ of relaxation that a chiropractic adjustment can bring, rather than worry about the ‘nasty noise’. Be proactive in your health and not reactive, a precious gem that needs polishing for our well-being.

What is ‘Subluxation’ in Chiropractic?

You could have heard of the term ‘Subluxation’ in Chiropractic. What is subluxation? What are the causes? Why is ‘removal’ of subluxation critical for you to remain healthy, disease-free and pain-free?

A subluxation is the condition of a vertebra that has lost its proper juxtaposition with the one above or the one below, or both; to an extent less than a luxation, which impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses.

  • W. Stephenson, Author of Chiropractic Textbook 1927

“Nature needs no help, just no interference.”

  • BJ Palmer, Developer of Chiropractor (1882 – 1961) and son of Chiropractic Founder, D D Palmer

Just like a stone impeding the flow of a river, a subluxation impedes the flow of our nervous system. By adjusting those subluxations (that is, misaligned bones) in the spine, we are removing the interferences in our nervous system.

How does subluxation affect you? It can cause joint damage, nerve damage, tissue damage, muscle damage and health damage if we do not address it properly and timely.

So how do we know if our nervous system has interference through subluxations? These are the tell-tale signs:

  • You have poor posture or curved back
  • You are unable to walk properly without strain and pain
  • You often do not feel good and are not living your best
  • You get tired easily, feel fatigued, and feel restless every day
  • You have backaches, headaches, sore or tender spots in the muscles and the joints
  • You have low resistance to disease(s) and infections
  • You are not able to take a deep breath properly or have breathing difficulty.

These are some signs that the subluxations have affected your nervous system and caused you to have interferences in the nervous system. If you do not wish to suffer ill health or be prone to diseases due to subluxations of your vertebrae, timely chiropractic adjustments will help restore your body equilibrium and health.

Chiropractors use objective measures and techniques to detect and remove those subluxations so that your body will regain the natural ability to heal and your health. When we remove the interferences to our nervous system, our innate life force is able to communicate with our entire body through our nerves, helping our body to keep functioning at its best.

If you have any of the conditions and effects above, seek help timely and get adjusted, to ensure that your nervous system is in-check and that your body can function more optimally.

Thoughts, Traumas and Toxins – Three Terrible ‘Ts’

Three things can cause dysfunctions in the nervous system and dis—eases. Dysfunctions in the nervous system can misalign your spine, cause interference in the communication link between your brain and spine and devastate the entire nervous system.

How do these Three Terrible ‘Ts’ work against your body, your health and your well-being?

  • Thoughts
  • Traumas
  • Toxins

Thoughts cause emotional dysfunctions, which influence the brain and ultimately affect the nervous system. The brain produces a whole range of chemicals that affect the body, changing things on a molecular level, which can result in dis–ease.

Thoughts include the emotion of worry, fear, frustration, anger, sadness, grief and effort, which you feel in everyday life and often ignored or taken lightly. These emotions cause imbalances in the body and, over time, result in negative effects like pain, numbness, hormonal imbalances, digestive problems, elimination problems, blood and circulatory imbalances,  insomnia, cysts, growths, nervous system imbalances etc. To be in good health, we need to be happy and be free from ‘emotions’!

Traumas cause ‘mechanical’ dysfunctions, leading to changes at the molecular level, which can also result in dis–ease. Physical traumas like falls, accidents, shocks, whiplash and poor ergonomics can result in posture abnormalities, which, in turn, affect the body and spine. Emotional traumas can also affect the nervous system negatively. It is like a chain of cascading effects that triggers a chain reaction within the ‘sub systems’ of the entire body system. Think of the conventional power grid system. When power lines are overloaded, a line trip will cause other or all lines to trip, too.

Toxins cause physical dysfunctions that can affect the nervous system. Toxins we absorb, inhale or ingest can enter the body and produce changes on a molecular level, resulting in dis–ease. Toxins can be from the environment, our food, water/drinks, pollution, ‘chemicals/drugs’, ‘WiFi pollution’ and too much radiation from electronic gadgets etc.

By getting adjusted regularly and thinking happy thoughts, reducing stress levels, eating ‘clean’ and with proper nutrition, walking properly to avoid falls, and getting some fresh air through daily walks will keep your nervous system in check.

It is your choice to live healthily and happily so that you can express your full potential in life optimally. It is a choice you will never regret!

Can Chiropractic ‘Cure’ My Ailments and Pain?

“Chiropractic emphasize the fact that when the patient’s state of the organism undergoes a departure from the ideally-well state, it is most likely due to an aberration in the internal dynamic — not an external factor. The goal is to restore resistance before a serious disease can develop.” Essential Principles of Chiropractic, Dr. Virgil Strang, D.C., Ph.C..

Can Chiropractors ‘Cure’ Ailments and Pain?

We do not. We simply remove the interference(s) in the nervous system that prevent(s) your body from functioning optimally. Sometimes, interferences in the nervous system impede that healing and functioning process, causing stuck patterns and a process of dis–ease.

Dis–ease is a cumulative process. It worsens overtime. When dis–ease happens long enough, the symptoms of the subsequent stuck patterns will become a ‘disease’, labelled by the characteristics of that disease.

The removal of dis–ease or healing is also a process. It is not a one-off event. When the healing process has reduced dis–ease to the point that the symptoms defining a ‘disease’ are no longer present for a period, we call it a ‘cure’.

The word ‘cure’ is event-oriented and misleading. Worse still, many individuals expect miracles and instant result(s) when their condition(s) had been built up over many years or their lifetime.

The symptom-oriented and event-oriented language of ‘disease’ and ‘cure’ obfuscate the fact that we are dealing with an intelligent nervous system that is always in a process of attempting to adapt and self-heal.

How Chiropractic Helps

There are many medical, surgical and non-invasive modalities to deal with ailments, pain and diseases.  These could be due to physical, mental, emotional, environmental and chemical factors.

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive and non-drug alternative to alleviate your health ailments, pain and symptoms. If the conditions are prolonged and serious, X-rays and MRIs are required for analysis and recommendations of adjustment procedures and/or care plan. Some conditions may require medical or surgical interventions.

Typical Chiropractic adjustment techniques and interventions include:

– Identifying the underlying cause(s) that resulted in the conditions using the Zone Technique. This technique identifies which system(s) of the body (glandular, elimination, nerves, digestive, musculoskeletal and circulatory) have interference(s) with the nervous system. Essentially, this means that we try to remove the interference to the nervous system so that the brain can communicate with the spine and adjacent structures, organs and functions in the body, and vice versa, in a closed loop.

– Adjusting the spine, hips, upper and lower limbs, cranium, upper neck, etc using manual adjustments, instrument adjustments to help eliminate the cause(s).

– Using complementary Nutritional Assessment and Advisory, Traction, Orthotics and Exercise Management and Health/Well-Being Management.

After Chiropractic adjustments and other necessary interventions, the body will be in a more favorable state to deal with the symptoms. With that, the body will be able to tackle the symptoms and heal itself from the inside out.

Health Is a Choice

Yes, Chiropractic and complementary practices can help you achieve optimal health and remove the interferences in your nervous system that caused the pain, numbness and symptoms. There is no magic formula or cookie-cutter approach to good health, if you continue to ‘harm’ your body and your nervous system. Prevention is always better than cure!  Making the right choice and being consistent in your healthcare interventions is your best strategy to achieve optimal health.
